Jack’s in his favourite corner now ;)
Waiting for the rain to stop. He really enjoyed it this morning, I think now he’s not too keen on the wind. Wise.

Day 40 - Jack is taking his time, practising flapping a lot, often while running. He's also jumped on the nest box a few times today (and this time the camera was in the right place).
He was brought food five times today, Parakeet three times and Pigeon the other two. He was so full he refused food at times. I mentioned to people watching this evening that sometimes parents withdraw food to force their young to fledge. They obviously didn't want Jack to fledge today...
He went on and off the wall 32 times, definitely getting good exercise by doing that, plus the four times he jumped onto the nest box.

Day 39 - Jack made it onto the top of the nest box, once, and sadly the ptz camera wasn't pointing there so all there is is a shot from the old camera. But he did it, flapped for a while and left safely.
He was very active today, in between a few naps, running from one end of the ledge to the next, sometime on the ledge, sometime on the wall. He got very close to the edge as you'll see on some of the shots.
He was fed twice today and guess what it was... Yes. Parakeet both times ;)
He enjoyed the few drops of rain, flapping almost the whole time.

Jack managed to grab the food off Tom before Flame arrived and ran away with it. (She let him eat on his own for a while then grabbed it off him.) ... See MoreSee Less

Day 38 - Jack is edging ever more closely to fledging. Today he spent nearly the whole day on the wall and, as I'm typing this, has settled to roost on it by the wall, the usual falcon's roosting spot. Flame is on top of the nest box, which is where she's spent part of the past few nights.
He is sometimes pancaking but, more often than not, he's sitting and sleeping standing as an adult.
He's had some frantic flapping sessions, has started to run the length of the ledge while flapping, and briefly lifted off this evening.
He was fed twice, Parakeet both times.
He's played chase with Tom a couple of times ;)
I hope you enjoy the shots. There is still a fair bit of down on his back but that's the last big patch.

Mother and son at dawn :)

Fledge Watch.

Jack will be fledging soon. It is up to him to decide and, as we know, it can be quite variable. Looking at the dates of the previous two single male chicks it could be tomorrow if he is like Will (this was an accidental one precipitated by an intruder and he properly fledged the day after) or Wednesday next week if he is like PF (who notoriously took his time and fledged on Trooping the Colours). As you can see a big gap but, on average it's around 40/42 days.

It will be difficult to have a full Fledge Watch this year but any help will be welcome. I will be around in the cemetery as much as I can during the day and definitely in the late afternoons/early evenings from Thursday. I will be there almost all day during the weekend. If you are local and can watch from home please keep an eye. The number I can be contacted on is 0739 4378 828, that number will also be on the posters I will put up around the hospital later.

Fingers crossed it all goes well and Jack flies safely!

Day 37 - The down's going fast! The fluffy white pantaloons have been replaced by sleek legs ;)
Jack has been edging ever closer to the outside edge, even backing all the way once for a poop. He's also briefly settled in a pancake on the wall a couple of times.
He and Tom should have their own show... They're hilarious at times with Jack running after Tom all over the place with Tom having only one thought, getting to the nest box... He finally managed this evening while Jack was asleep digesting his big dinner. He also managed to have a courtship display with Flame inside the box! I hope this chasing on the ledge will translate into great chasing in the sky once Jack has fledged. In the past though Charlie was the one doing the flying with the lone youngsters, we'll see...
Jack was fed twice today, Parakeet on both occasions.
As usual, I hope you enjoy the shots, lots of close ups again today.
